5 Things You May Not Know About Roaches

Last updated 6 months ago

You’ve probably seen one or more of these little pests scurrying around your kitchen, looking for a midnight snack. But if you aren’t familiar with what makes a cockroach such a fascinating pest, then you might find the following facts about roaches to be very interesting:

  1. Roaches have been around since the dinosaurs. For several hundred million years, the roach has been living on planet Earth. With their fast reflexes, sensitive nerves, and ability to survive in a wide range of temperatures, roaches are some of the most resilient pests around.
  2. Roaches can swim. Don’t try to drown a roach—this pest can swim, and will hold its breath for up to 40 minutes underwater. The only way to get rid of roaches is to starve them, dehydrate them, and keep them out by calling a pest control service.
  3. Roaches have over 2000 lenses in their eyes. Because roaches have compound eyes with over 2000 individual lenses, they are very sensitive to light. You will usually find that this pest prefers to scurry around at night rather than in the daytime. They usually keep those eyes closed, too—up to 75% of a roach’s time is spent simply resting.
  4. A roach can live one week without its head. If you ever manage to separate a roach from its head, then just know that it will still be able to survive for about another week. Even then, a roach only dies because it loses the ability to drink water.
  5. There are 5000 species of roaches worldwide. Roaches prefer warm temperatures, which is why most roach species are found in the tropics. Although there are thousands of roach species worldwide, many of the roaches that are found inside of the home are one of five common species.
